Hm. Forgot I had a LiveJournal. A lot has happened since May of last year. In short:

- My husband and I are back in America.

- I'm finishing up my undergrad degree at a small school in Central Ohio called Otterbein College.

- The Odyssey story came out in September '08, in the issue "Stiff: The Engrossing Cadaver," with beautiful illustrations by Courtney Autumn Martin:

- Evan's Permuted Press story is now available in their Monstrous anthology:

- I've been accepted into the Stonecoast MFA Program this summer, and could not possibly be more excited about it.

- ChiZine bought my gardening/zombie story, "In Bloom." I'm one sale away from qualifying for SFWA membership, which is cool, even though at this point in my life I couldn't afford to pay the dues anyway.

New Acceptances

Good news: I've had a short story accepted by the children's science magazine Odyssey. "The King of Dead Things" will appear in their October issue, and concerns a Māori lizard god who lives in a cavern deep beneath the earth and eats corpses. I thought it might be a little scary for ten-year-olds, but I suppose that most kids have considerably less whimsical things to worry about by the time they're that age.

Evan also recently had a short story accepted, for an upcoming Permuted Press anthology about giant creatures. His story, "Extinction," will be the only fantasy amidst a wealth of science fiction and horror.

Both of these were originally written for Kacklekurk, my writing group, and I'm pleased to see it paying off. We could use an infusion of new blood, though, if anyone's interested in reading and writing (mostly) speculative fiction.

Orange Juice and Toothpaste

So over at Bathed and Infused they did a contest where you could submit the notes, name, and description of a scent, and if you won they would blend and sell it as a springtime limited edition.

My entry "Orange Juice and Toothpaste" was one of the winners, so if you've ever tasted that disgusting combination and thought, wow, this is what I want to smell like, now you finally have the opportunity.

(Actually it's a pleasant citrus/mint blend that's particularly nice as a body wash.)

Sybil's Garage No. 5 is out; color me excited.

I haven't gotten my contributor copy yet, so I can't comment on the other stories, but I'm expecting interesting things.

I know that my mom ordered a copy, and if my mom can support indie press, can't you?

In other news, I'll be returning to school in the US this fall. (This is a relief, since I missed the application deadlines to both schools that I applied to.) I just can't wait for that undergrad degree in creative writing to really turn my life around.

I'm looking forward to so happy day.

I turned 22 today, which is lame because 21 is the last exciting birthday until you hit 100.

Makiko, one of my students, brought Evan and I a Christmas cake and a couple bottles of imported beer, since she knew her lesson was the day before my birthday. I know that Japan has a gift-giving culture, but I was still stunned (and slightly embarrassed) by her thoughtfulness. It proves, however, that she has her finger firmly on the American pulse: cake and beer. If only she'd brought chunks of raw meat, it would've felt just like home.

I sent the final copy of "Waiting for Spring" (fka "1993") to Sybil's Garage. I don't know when Issue 5 comes out, but I'm excited about it.
